Insert Keywords into URL Addresses

To improve your search engine ranking and help users recall your URLs, create file names that contain each webpage's primary keyphrase, such as: "MarineAnimals.org/dolphin-health.html," "MarineAnimals.org/captive-dolphins.html," and "MarineAnimals.org/dolphin-species.html."

Separate each keyphrase with a hyphen. Do not clump keywords together or separate the words with spaces or underscores. Also, avoid adding non-keywords to the URL. A filename is not a title – keep it as short as possible.

f your existing website already has un-optimized file names, leave these pages alone and focus on new content. However, if your webpages are not yet indexed in Google, or if a particular webpage has a long history of poor search engine rankings despite other attempts at optimization, try replacing the old file name with a keyphrase-rich file name. But don't just erase the old URL. Instead, create a 301 redirect, which sends visitors who arrive at the old webpage to its new location.
