Copywrite for Search Engines

Search engine copywriting is the art of strategically inserting words into a webpage's text in order to improve its search-engine ranking. When a webpage uses a keyphrase in the correct places and in the correct amounts, search engines will identify that page as relevant to searches on that term.

Copywriting for search engines is such an important skill that I've dedicated an entire chapter to it. That Internet Copywriting chapter is highly recommended to anyone embarking on Search Engine Optimization.

However, if your time is too limited, here is a summary of the most essential internet copywriting techniques:

  • Assign one primary keyphrase and a couple of secondary keyphrases to each webpage on your site.
  • Use primary and secondary keyphrases in heading tags.
  • Repeat the primary keyphrase multiple times in the first paragraphs.
  • Achieve an overall keyphrase density of 3%-7% (the primary keyphrase should appear 3 to 7 times for every 100 words of text).
  • To improve readability, it's okay to sometimes use variants of the keyphrase, as well as variations such as plurals and different tenses.
  • Replace generic words such as "it" and "this" with keyphrases where possible.
  • Use keyphrases in hyperlinks in place of unspecific phrases such as "click here."
  • Don't go overboard: avoid using keyphrases unnaturally.
