Request "Keyphrase-Rich" Text Links

If the topic of your webpage is the importance of creating backyard habitats, then:

You'll get a bigger boost at Google for the ranking of your webpage on backyard habitats if most of the links to your site use "backyard habitats" in the text that links to you.

As another example, consider the case of the Feminist Majority Foundation. At the time this chapter was written, its home page (http://feminist.org) ranked 5th at Google for the search term "domestic abuse."

If the Feminist Majority Foundation wants to boost its influence on domestic abuse issues, the foundation would be wise to ask its volunteers to seek keyphrase-rich text links from websites and blogs that focus on domestic abuse issues.

When making link requests, be prescriptive about requesting keyphrase-rich text links. Otherwise,  you'll receive a wide variety of links, such as:

SCENARIO A SCENARIO B SCENARIO C SCENARIO D
For more information, visit: http://feminist.org For more information on reducing domestic abuse, click here. The Foundation provides more information on reducing domestic abuse. The Feminist Majority Foundation provides more information on reducing domestic abuse.

  • Scenario A is particularly unfortunate because the raw URL is not in close proximity to any mention of "domestic abuse."
  • Scenario B is a missed opportunity because a generic text link (i.e., "click here") is used. On the bright side, the hyperlink is immediately adjacent to the target keyphrase "domestic abuse."
  • Scenario C is actually worse than Scenario B, because the text link is more closely associated with "Foundation" than with "domestic abuse."
  • Scenario D is a spectacular success because it promotes The Feminist Majority Foundation while demonstrating the relevance of http://feminist.org   to the subject of "domestic abuse."
