Step 4: Hijack Your Opponents' Keyphrases

As a nonprofit organization, you may not have "competitors" in the traditional sense. However, your goal may be to win the "share of influence" battle for your particular viewpoint. If this is the case, you will need to hijack the keyphrases used by websites that promote opposing perspectives.

For instance, if your goal is to inspire more Catholic men to consider a career in the priesthood, you may find that your "competition" in internet blog channels is from negative articles about sexual abuse by priests. In that case, your "share of influence" goal might be to significantly increase the ratio of positive vs. negative internet posts that rank highly for the keyphrases "Catholic priest" and "priesthood."

Take a few minutes to visit each of your competitors' websites. Again, review the page titles, descriptions, and keyphrase meta tag information. Select keyphrases that are relevant to your cause, and add them to your master list. Remember to include the name of competing organizations in the keyphrase list.
